Have you ever searched for a service on Google and found that the generated list didn’t include a business you knew was established in the community? Or perhaps you’ve even entered a company by name and didn’t see it in the results? When looking for a restaurant or plumber, this might be a minor inconvenience. But in home care marketing, where families are making sensitive and urgent decisions, invisibility is a dealbreaker.

The fact is that caregiver agencies must have a complete, optimized Google Business Profile (GBP) to elicit trust—it’s not just a best practice but a mandatory step.

Visibility and Vetting (Your GBP Dual Function)

In business, simple strategic pivots often have outsized impacts. Here’s the hard truth: if you ignore GBP optimization over the next 12–24 months, you will lose home care leads to other companies that understand local search. The numbers don’t lie.

  • 29% of senior care consumers turn to Google first.
  • 51% validate agency quality through reviews.
  • GBPs with photos receive 35% more clicks.

These home care trends highlight a few things. First, an optimized GBP that improves SEO provides a direct, low-resistance pathway for prospective clients and caregivers to find agencies, resulting in more starts-of-care and new hires. Furthermore, these leads are entirely passive—the textbook definition of “low-hanging-fruit.”

Second, agencies with optimized GBPs and positive online reviews convert more client prospects and job candidates. These leads might initially hear about the agency through a friend, community partner, or referral source, but they’re still going online to validate credibility. If a GBP is non-existent or lackluster, they’re likely to move on to the next one.

Finally, keeping a GBP updated is critical. It’s not enough to “set it and forget it.” Agencies that regularly update client/caregiver reviews and add pictures of staff, office activities, and participation in community events sustain their legitimacy over time for continued home care leads. The good news is that ongoing maintenance requires minimal effort and time.

The 3 Ways to Prepare

Preparation Strategy 1: Claim & Complete Your Profile (No Cost!)

If you haven’t yet claimed your GBP, this is your first step. Search for your agency on Google Maps. If your profile exists but isn’t claimed, verify ownership. This is usually done via postcard. You request one during the setup process, and Google mails a postcard to your physical address with a PIN for validation.

If it doesn’t exist, create one. Complete the basic business demographics and write a compelling 750-character description of services. Importantly, focus on your agency’s “distinctions.” This is where you note things like “dementia training for caregivers,” and “same day start-of-care available”–things that matter to prospective clients and caregiver applicants.

Finally, add your high-quality photos and client/caregiver testimonials. Remember, complete profiles generate 35% more clicks than those that are incomplete. They also convert more shoppers into buyers through validation (regardless of the original lead/referral source).

Preparation Strategy 2: Build a Review & Response System

Once your GBP is created and optimized, create a simple system to maintain it. Again, this doesn’t require a significant time commitment. But consistency is important.

The main goal is to secure regular client and caregiver reviews. These are obtained by doing two simple things: 1) Asking for them, and 2) Making it easy for responders to add them to the GBP. Successful systems use an “all of the above” strategy, which includes phone calls, text messages with direct links, and emails with QR codes and simple instructions.

It’s a numbers game. If you have 10 new caregiver hires and 10 new starts-of-care every month, then you also have 20 potential Google Reviews. To be fair, the majority of these people won’t leave one. But assuming 10% do, an additional two reviews per month is enough to stay relevant, improve SEO, and build your reputation.

You might ask, “What about negative reviews—isn’t this a double-edged sword?” Yes, but these can be managed, and the risk-reward tradeoff is favorable. When any review comes in (positive or negative), it’s important to respond quickly. Be sure to thank responders for positive reviews. And if one is negative, provide a concise and professional reply, offering to discuss the matter further offline.

Preparation Strategy 3: Actively Market Your GBP to Families and Caregivers

Include your optimized GBP as another arrow in your home care marketing quiver. Yes, it’s a must-have necessity if you want to establish credibility and capture passive leads through Google search. But it can also be used for proactive marketing.

Create a simple landing page: “See What Families Say About Us” linking directly to your Google reviews. Send the link or QR code in outbound marketing emails. Create print versions as leave-behinds for hospital and facility referral sources when you can’t get past the gatekeeper. Post monthly updates to your GBP that resonate with caregiver and client audiences—care tips, caregiver spotlights, seasonal health advice. You can even leverage it for caregiver recruitment, using the jobs posting feature!

The Future-Proof Checklist

Ask yourself:

  • Is your GBP claimed, verified, and 100% complete?
  • Do you have 15+ reviews with an average rating of 4.5+ stars?
  • Do you respond to all reviews within 48 hours?
  • Do you post fresh content (tips, updates, photos) at least monthly?
  • Are you using the job posting feature to attract caregivers?
  • Does your website link directly to your GBP for easy navigation?
  • Are you actively requesting reviews from satisfied families, clients, and caregivers?

If you check fewer than five boxes, there’s plenty of low-effort opportunity to grow.

Start Small, Grow Fast

If you’re an agency owner prioritizing home care growth, you might be considering “big” initiatives that require significant time commitments and financial investments. However, small strategic changes can also make a difference. These sometimes fly under the radar or get lost in day-to-day routines, but the numbers speak for themselves. Mastering your GBP is one of the best ways to quickly generate significant marketing ROI.
